{"id":107,"date":"2010-02-28T21:33:25","date_gmt":"2010-03-01T03:33:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mylifewithdogs.com\/?p=107"},"modified":"2010-02-28T21:33:25","modified_gmt":"2010-03-01T03:33:25","slug":"shelby-turns-4-reflections-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mylifewithdogs.com\/?p=107","title":{"rendered":"Shelby Turns 4:  Reflections, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, now I had a new puppy&#8230;and what a puppy!\u00c2\u00a0 Shelby was so smart&#8230;.scary smart.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I remember once when I was throwing him a ball and it landed on top of his crate.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He couldn&#8217;t reach it by putting his legs up on the cage.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He stopped, never taking his eye off the ball.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He went inside the cage, still looking at the ball.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He went back out again, eye still on the ball.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Then, he ran back into the crate, put his nose up on the top so he could touch the ball, then moved it towards the side.\u00c2\u00a0 He came back out, stood up so he could reach the top, grabbed the ball, now in reach, and trotted happily back over to me to throw it again!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It was quite a site to witness!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mylifewithdogs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Baby-Shelby2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-108\" title=\"Baby Shelby2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mylifewithdogs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/Baby-Shelby2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Baby Shelby<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But, the honeymoon soon ended&#8230;Shelby was a terror!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He chewed everything, wouldn&#8217;t listen, grabbed stuff and wouldn&#8217;t give it back&#8230;you know, typical puppy stuff.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 But, it had been over 15 years since I had last had a puppy&#8230;.and I was 15 years older and less patient!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I was at my wits end.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 As\u00c2\u00a0Shelby got older, he seemed to get smarter &#8211; and less inclined to listen to me.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It was really starting to be a problem.\u00c2\u00a0 I was getting more and more stressed out &#8211; to the point where I was crying quite often about Shelby and what he had done that day.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 I remember even contemplating getting rid of him, something I had never thought about before with any dog.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 It was getting really bad.<\/p>\n<p>I took him to Narnia, a very well respected training facility in Naperville, for some basic puppy kindergarten.\u00c2\u00a0 He was kicked out of class for distracting everyone and humping &#8211; he was fixed!\u00c2\u00a0 But just overly rambunctious.\u00c2\u00a0 How embarrassing to have your dog\u00c2\u00a0asked to leave\u00c2\u00a0class!<\/p>\n<p>I remember him running away at Lake Summerset.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He ran up Corkhill Court, with me in hot pursuit, calling his name and telling him to come.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He stopped, looked at me, and kept on running the opposite direction!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He was caught by someone walking down the street with their dog when Shelby went to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>The next time he ran away, also at Lake Summerset, I didn&#8217;t notice until he had been gone a while, not sure how long.\u00c2\u00a0 I was frantic!\u00c2\u00a0 I took the car and drove all around, even driving on the main road in case he crawled under the fence and ran through the field into the street.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 He had only run about a half a block down and ran over to someone sitting in their garage &#8211;
